How I Fixed the Windows Update Error 0x80070643

27 October 0
Microsoft releases updates for Windows to add new features and fix bugs in the current version. Most updates download without problems, but some can cause errors during the download. One such error is Windows update error 0x80070643, which occurs while downloading the Windows 10 KB5034441 update.

Is Downloading the Windows 10 KB5034441 Update Important?

Microsoft released the KB5034441 update in January 2024. If your computer uses Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), this update automatically applies the Safe OS Dynamic Update to address a security vulnerability. If left unpatched, attackers could exploit this vulnerability to bypass BitLocker encryption through WinRE.

That means there's no question about downloading the KB5034441 update for Windows 10—it's a crucial security fix, and it's important to install it. However, there is a catch.

It turns out the error 0x80070643 occurs even on systems that lack a Recovery partition. The exact error is:
There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643).

Microsoft clearly states that if your system doesn't have a Recovery partition, you don't need to download the KB5034441 update and you can ignore this error. However, if your system does feature a Recovery partition, it's important for you to download the update and, unfortunately, Microsoft isn't going to release an automatic fix that will solve the 0x80070643 error.

Earlier, when the report broke about users facing this issue, Microsoft acknowledged it and said they were working on a fix. However, that hasn't panned out (yet).

They have updated their blog that discusses the error to mention that "Automatic resolution of this issue won't be available in a future Windows update. Manual steps are necessary to complete the installation of this update on devices which are experiencing this error." This means the only way for you to get rid of the problem is to perform the manual fix released by Microsoft, which is resizing the partition.

What is the WinRE Recovery Partition?

When you open the Disk Management tool on your computer, you will see a Recovery partition section in the area where the drive with the operating system is listed. But what exactly is this Recovery partition?

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a built-in feature provided by Windows that helps you recover your computer when it has been corrupted for various reasons, and you cannot boot it. Additionally, it will help recover your system when it has become unusable due to incorrect updates or accidental removal of system files.

To check if the Recovery partition is configured properly on your computer, open Command Prompt as an administrator, type reagentc /info, and hit Enter. If you see "Enabled" next to Windows RE status, it means your computer has a Recovery partition, and it is working properly.

For you to install the KB5034441 update, there must be 250 MB of free space in the Recovery partition. If the partition has less than that, you will encounter the 0x80070643 error when downloading the update.

How to Fix the Windows Update Error 0x80070643

As mentioned earlier, the 0x80070643 error occurs when the Recovery partition doesn't have 250 MB of free space. This means that to fix the problem, you will need to provide more space to the Recovery partition. To do that, open Command Prompt as an administrator, type reagentc /disable to disable the Recovery partition, and hit Enter.

Type diskpart and hit Enter.

Execute the list disk command to list all the disks.

Select the disk where your operating system is installed. For example, if it is Disk 1, type select disk 1 and hit Enter.

Type list partition to list the partitions on the disk.

Select the primary disk partition. For example, if it is Partition 3, type select partition 3 and hit Enter.

You'll now have to shrink the partition. For that, type shrink desired=250 minimum=250 and hit Enter.

Now, select the Recovery partition. It will be labeled as "Recovery." For example, if it is Partition 4, type select partition 4 and hit Enter.

Type delete partition override and hit Enter to delete the recovery partition.

Here's the most important step. Scroll up in your Command Prompt window and check the disk partition style. If there's an asterisk (*) in the GPT column of your operating system disk, it means you have GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition style. If there's no asterisk in the GPT column, then it's MBR partition style.

If your disk is GPT, type create partition primary id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac and hit Enter. Then, type gpt attributes =0x8000000000000001 and hit Enter. If your disk is MBR, type create partition primary id=27 and hit Enter.

Type format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools" and hit Enter. This will format the partition.

Execute list vol to confirm that the recovery partition has been created.

Type exit and hit Enter to exit Diskpart.

Re-enable the Recovery partition by typing reagentc /enable and hitting Enter.

Finally, to confirm the Recovery partition is configured properly on your computer, type reagentc /info and hit Enter. If you see "Enabled" next to Windows RE status, it means the Recovery partition is working properly. After that, restart your computer and try downloading the Windows update again. This time, the error code 0x80070643 shouldn't interrupt the download process.

Windows updates and error codes are a never-ending story, and this definitely won't be the last time you encounter an error code interfering with the Windows update process. But, like any other problem in the world, Windows update errors have their own solutions. Hopefully, the above fix has helped you get rid of the Windows update error 0x80070643, and you're able to successfully download the KB5034441 security update from Microsoft.

Is Upgrading from Google Pixel 8 Pro to Pixel 9 Pro Worth It?

13 August 1
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is here, but is it the right Pixel phone for you?

On Tuesday, Google announced the redesigned Pixel 9 Pro at its Made by Google event in Mountain View, California. Whether you're a current Pixel user or you're thinking about getting a new phone, you may now be wondering whether the new Pixel 9 Pro is worth your money.

The most exciting part of new Pixel launches is usually software, but there are some hardware differences that might justify trading in your old phone for the Pixel 9 Pro. You can still buy a Pixel 8 Pro directly from Google, though, and the Pixel 9 Pro's advantages might not be worth it for everyone.

Here's a look at how the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro compare and how to decide which one is right for you.

Pixel 9 Pro vs Pixel 8 Pro: Price

The Pixel 9 Pro announced on Tuesday starts at $999, the same original starting price as the Pixel 8 Pro. That doesn't mean both models have the same price, though.

Google offers two generations of Pixel phones simultaneously, with the previous year's models having a reduced starting price. That means you can now get the Pixel 8 Pro for $899 if you don't need all the latest features in the Pixel 9 Pro or want to save some money.

For instance, you could use that $100 starting price difference to upgrade your storage in the Pixel 8 Pro, scoring 256GB instead of 128GB.

There's one additional wrinkle in Google's pricing this year: the Pixel 9 Pro comes in two different sizes, 6.3-inch and 6.8-inch. The larger 6.8-inch version, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, has a higher starting price of $1,099. To put that into perspective, the Pixel 8 Pro features a 6.7-inch display. So, the Pixel Pro pricing line-up currently looks like this:

  • Google Pixel 9 w/ free $100 Credit: from $799 @ Google Store
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro w/ free $200 Credit: from $999 @ Google Store
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL w/ free $200 Credit: from $1,099 @ Google Store
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold w/ free $350 Credit: from $1,799 @ Google Store

Retaining the old model at a reduced price is Apple's typical strategy and makes me wonder what the future holds for the Pixel 9a when it presumably launches in early 2025, but that's a question for another day.

Pixel 9 Pro vs Pixel 8 Pro: Specs

The Pixel 9 Pro might cost more than the Pixel 8 Pro, but some notable spec differences could make that higher price worth it.

For example, the Pixel 9 Pro has 16GB of RAM, while the Pixel 8 Pro only has 12GB. You might not notice the difference much during tasks like web browsing or scrolling through social media, but extra RAM can offer a significant performance boost for AI tasks or gaming.

The Pixel 9 Pro also has the newer Google Tensor G4 processor, while the Pixel 8 Pro has last year's Google Tensor G3.

Rumors ahead of this week's Made by Google event hinted that the Tensor G4 only offers minor improvements over the Tensor G3. If you're currently using a Pixel 8 Pro, upgrading to the Pixel 9 Pro might not provide a significant performance boost. On the other hand, if you have an older Pixel, you'll probably appreciate the newer processor and extra RAM, especially if you like to multi-task, play games, or use on-device AI. We'll of course know more once we get the Pixel 9 Pro in for testing.

One spec that might convince current Pixel users to upgrade is the new camera setup. The Pixel 9 Pro features a 42MP front-facing camera, a massive upgrade over the 10.5MP selfie camera in the Pixel 8 Pro. The rear camera array also supports Super Res Zoom and 8K for video now. So, if camera quality and features are your top priority, the Pixel 9 Pro could be a worthy upgrade.

Pixel 9 Pro vs Pixel 8 Pro: Design

The Pixel 9 Pro's design aesthetic resembles previous Pixel models, but there are a few differences. The most obvious is the redesigned camera bump. This year, Google adopted a more squared-off pill-shaped design and ditched the curved bar-style camera bump seen on the Pixel 8 Pro. While the camera bar had staunch defenders, it's remained a contentious design, so it will be interesting to see how people react to this change.

Google applied that squared-off aesthetic to the entire chassis design on the Pixel 9 Pro. It has flat edges all the way around, unlike the curves on last year's model.

The Pixel 9 Pro and 8 Pro also come in slightly different colors. Both are available in black and white, but Google revamped the pale "Mint" green on the Pixel 8 Pro with a darker "Hazel" green for the Pixel 9 Pro. Google also swapped out last year's "Bay" blue for "Rose Quartz," which is a pale pink. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are both available in the same four colors.

These differences come down to personal preference, although none alone justify upgrading, especially if you already have a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro.

Pixel 9 Pro vs Pixel 8 Pro: How to choose

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro are both powerful Android phones, and most people will have a good experience with either. The main differences to consider are price, camera, and design.

The Pixel 8 Pro has a lower starting price than the Pixel 9 Pro, making it the frontrunner for those looking to save some money. However, the Pixel 9 Pro has a far more powerful front-facing camera. Both phones have similar rear camera arrays, but the Pixel 9 Pro could be worth paying a bit more for if you frequently use your selfie camera.

Design mainly comes down to personal preferences, but the new Rose Quartz color is exclusive to the Pixel 9 Pro. So, if you're a fan of pink, you'll want to go with that one.

It's also worth noting that the Pixel 9 Pro is probably not worth upgrading if you already have a Pixel 8 Pro. Unless the RAM boost or improved selfie camera are game changers for you, the cost for a trade-in isn't worth it.

Laptop Mag will be covering all the latest news from this week's Made by Google event, so stay tuned for more details and updates.

Four Ways to Experience macOS Sequoia's Best Features Before Its Fall Release

12 August 0
You can replicate some of the best features of macOS Sequoia now, even on older Macs. Here's how.

Apple’s upcoming annual update for Macs looks to be one of its most significant in years.

Called macOS Sequoia, it not only adds a handful of major new features — from iPhone mirroring to a unified password manager app — but also addresses long-overdue concerns.

It also features Windows-style multitasking and a smarter, AI-powered Siri.

But you don’t have to wait for the macOS Sequoia update to roll out publicly this fall — or fumble through sometimes buggy beta versions that are out this summer.

You can replicate some of the best features of macOS Sequoia now, even on older Macs.

That's because many of macOS Sequoia’s headlining additions are inspired by existing third-party apps and ideas.

You can head over to the App Store to recreate some of Sequoia’s features, such as an AI writing assistant and automatic window tiling.

Here’s how to get started.

Snap and resize macOS app windows

Unlike Windows 11, resizing windows on a Mac to accommodate multiple windows in the same space has always felt like a chore. Sequoia’s new window tilting option overcomes this, allowing you to quickly snap windows onto one of the screen’s edges to arrange them into a side-by-side view. Several multitasking apps like Magnet let you easily replicate this on prior macOS versions.

Once you activate Magnet and grant it the necessary permissions, it will work in the background. To resize a window, drag it to an edge, and an outline will appear to tell you the size it will be resized into.

Say you want a grid of four app windows on your screen: You can select and move a window to the top right corner, and Magnet will rescale it to fit into that quadrant. Alternatively, you can use keyboard shortcuts to place a window into a set position, such as “Top Left” or “Left Two Thirds.”

Magnet costs a one-time $5 fee and can be downloaded from the App Store. If you’re OK with fewer positional choices, you can try the $3 BetterSnapTool.

Control your iPhone from your Mac

The only catch to this app is that it works over a USB connection. (Image credit: Future)

You don’t need macOS Sequoia to cast and control your iPhone from your Mac, either — you just have to download a free Mac utility.

The Screen Mirror app only has one catch: It works over a USB connection instead of Sequoia’s wireless function. Apart from that, though, it works as intended.

When you connect your iPhone to your Mac, the app pulls up your phone’s live screen in a window. You can drag it to adjust size or demonstrate something on a video call. There are no latency issues; it nearly instantly mirrors what you do on your iPhone.

The app requires you to pair your iPhone and Mac via Bluetooth to control it. When you do that, you can also manage your iPhone from your Mac and interact with it through the computer’s mouse and keyboard.

Screen Mirror is a free download, but if you pay for the $3 license, it won’t constantly nag you to upgrade.

Give your Mac an AI refresh

Because Elephas runs on generative AI, it acts as a general-purpose bot and isn't limited to plain text. (Image credit: Future)

MacOS Sequoia also marks the debut of Apple Intelligence, a series of AI-enabled tools and features, such as a writing aid and a more contextually aware Siri. A combination of third-party programs can also bring AI capabilities to older macOS versions.

An app called Elephas, for example, adds an always-on text assistant to your Mac. Any time you come across a text box, whether that’s in the Notes app or a browser tab, you can pull up Elephas to generate text based on a prompt, summarize emails, fix your grammar, and rewrite in a different tone.

Since Elephas runs on a Generative AI model, it acts as a general-purpose bot and is not restricted to plain text. It can whip up programming code, Excel formulas, and more from scratch.

Another AI utility you can install on your Mac is Rewind. This app behaves like your personal assistant and records everything you see, say, and hear on your Mac. It will then compose a searchable timeline and allow you to go back in time to look for a piece of information you accessed on your Mac. Its highlight is a built-in chatbot that enables you to ask questions directly.

Say you’ve been in and out of calls all day and don’t have the time to write follow-up emails. You can ask Rewind to take and summarize your meeting minutes and draft an email based on your schedule and past conversations. Rewind stores and processes your data offline on your Mac and doesn’t upload it to any servers.

Math superpowers for your notes

The default Notes app on macOS Sequoia can evaluate math expressions as you enter them in natural language. You can replicate this ability with Soulver, a free app that combines a calculator and a note-taking tool.

Soulver looks and works like your Mac’s native Notes app. However, when you type in math expressions alongside other text, it begins to solve them live in the extra panel on the right. It’s not limited to essential addition and subtraction either.

You can enter multi-step calculations, assign percentages and proportions to variables, and mix them with unit conversion. On a trip, for example, you can list your expenses in various currencies, and the app will automatically convert and tally them up. Moreover, Soulver can even fetch the latest stock prices and weather forecasts. In addition, its native AI assistant can fill in values from the internet if you can’t recall them. For instance, if you type in “population of Spain = ?”, it will replace the question mark will be replaced with the country’s population figure.

How do you sync an iPhone and iPad using iCloud?

09 August 0
Here's how to connect your favorite Apple devices together

Trying to sync up your iPhone and iPad? No worries, we've got you covered. It's not too complicated, but it's not very intuitive either. It's also not free... depending on how much storage you use.

The best iPad deals are popping off right now, so it's unsurprising that folks are trying to figure out how to sync their iPhone to their iPad. But you already knew that probably, since you're here.

Are you signed in?

First things first, before you sync your iPhone and iPad, you need to be on the same account. If you don't know, go to Settings and look in the top left corner.

Is your Apple ID identical to your iPhone and iPad? If not, click on the name there and press the Sign Out button on the bottom right.

From here, you can click the top left again and sign into the account you want both your iPhone and iPad to get access to.

Storage check: How much do you need?

How much storage do you have left in that bank? Each account comes with 5GB of free storage, which may not be enough to store all your data. My Google Photos are packing 150GB already, and that's from thousands of vacation photos (I can't stop taking pics of my cute baby).

Need more storage? Go to Settings and click on your name. Then, select iCloud and choose a plan that best suits your needs. There's 50GB for $1.29/month, 200GB for $3.99/month, and 2TB for $12.99/month. The 200GB plan should be more than enough for most people.

How to sync iPhone and iPad

Now that you've got the space, you can sync your iPhone and iPad without worrying about a traffic jam of data. Of course, don't forget to turn on iCloud backups in general, which you can do by going to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then toggle everything. Now, here's how to sync your iPhone and iPad.

Step 1. Like before, go to Settings on your iPhone and iPad > Your name > iCloud.

Step 2. In the section labeled "Apps using iCloud," click Show All.

Step 3. This is important: Toggle the apps you want to sync across devices, BUT your iPhone and iPad must share the same settings. So, if you've enabled syncing for iCloud Photos on one device, you need to enable it for the other as well to sync seamlessly.

Step 4. You might also want to sync your downloads, which you can do by going to Settings > App Store > Automatic Downloads. Again, toggle everything.

Your devices should be synced up now. If something doesn't get synced, you can check its status by going to Settings > Your Name > iCloud.

Here’s how I transformed my Asus ROG Ally X into a handheld Xbox.

07 August 0
Who needs the Xbox handheld when ROG Ally can do it just fine?

Rumors of an Xbox gaming handheld have been heating up ever since the beginning of the year, but what if you already had one without realizing it?

The Asus ROG Ally X launch on Monday resulted in the best Windows gaming handheld I've ever tested, and things get even better from a software side when you realize you can control your Xbox remotely.

This isn't necessarily exclusive to the Asus ROG Ally X. Any device with the Xbox App can manage this task, meaning even the original Ally, MSI Claw, or Lenovo Legion Go can accomplish the same feat.

It means you can play all of your Xbox games from the comfort of your Windows gaming handheld console through an internet connection. Of course, it may not seem super necessary, considering many games that launch on Xbox also come to PC and, by extension, the Asus ROG Ally X.

But if you're sporting an Xbox Series X and a strong internet connection, having that level of power behind your Windows gaming handheld is intoxicating.

I once did the same but for PlayStation, where I turned my ROG Ally into a PlayStation Portal, and I can thankfully say that Xbox has made it far easier than PlayStation did.

How to use your Xbox through Asus ROG Ally X

Turning your Asus ROG Ally X into a portable Xbox console isn't super complex, and it doesn't require a third-party application, functioning perfectly through the Xbox App and nothing more. With that said, there are quite a few steps, so pay attention carefully.

1. Open your Xbox Console

2. Go to Settings

3. Go to Devices & connections.

4. Select Remote features.

5. Toggle Enable remote features on.

6. The Xbox console will test its Remote Play capabilities and let you know what can be improved for an ideal experience. Decide which of these queries you want to address and then click Next.

7. It will then say This console is ready for remote play. Select Close.

8. Go to Power Options. While you can typically find these settings underneath Settings -> General, they're also available on the same screen where you enabled remote play. Look at the bottom right and select Power Options.

9. Select Sleep. Keep in mind that this will consume a lot more power than Shutdown (energy-saving). This means your console won't turn off when it actually powers down and will instead be in sleep mode. You might not want to do this if you're concerned about power consumption, but it is necessary for remote play on Xbox to work.

And just like that, the Xbox portion of this is complete. We can now move on to the Asus ROG Ally or whichever device you're planning to connect to your Xbox.

10. Open up the Asus ROG Ally, or any Windows device that can run the Xbox App.

11. Open the Xbox App.

12. Select your Avatar icon on the top left.

13. Click View profile.

14. Underneath the Where I Play section will be a widget for your Xbox console. Your console might already appear; if not, click Add a Console and follow the prompts on-screen. Remember, this will NOT appear until you have completed the previous steps. In particular, you must set your Xbox console to sleep mode for this to show up at all.

15. Once your Xbox console shows up in this part of the tutorial, click on the three dots to the right of your Xbox's console name (mine is just called Xbox One, in this case) and select Remote Play.

And that's it! You'll be treated to a cute little visual of a plane flying through an endless void as the connection establishes itself, and once it's through, you can control your Xbox freely with your Asus ROG Ally X.

Two people die in Westmeath helicopter crash

30 July 0

Two people have died following a helicopter crash near Killucan, County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland.

The incident happened at a rural farm at around 15:30 BST.

An Garda Síochána (Irish police) and emergency services responded to the incident.

Two men on board the helicopter were pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí are liaising with the family of one of the men, an Irish national aged in his 40s.

Gardaí have said they may require the assistance of Interpol in establishing contact with the next of kin of the second man, who they believe is from eastern Europe.

Both bodies have been taken from the scene to Regional Hospital Mullingar where post-mortem examinations will take place.

The local coroner has also been notified.

Westmeath Fire and Rescue Service and the National Ambulance Service have now left the scene which will remain persevered overnight.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) is the authority for investigating air accidents and serious incidents in Ireland and it is the lead agency investigating the incident.

'Shocked and saddened'

A local hurling club has cancelled all training for Tuesday evening.

Declan Weir, chairperson of Raharney Hurling Club, said the farm is very close to the GAA club.

"There was camogie and hurling training there this evening, so we called it off as a mark of respect to the families," Mr Weir told BBC News NI.

"That was our initial thing to do as a mark of respect to the families," he said.

Mr Weir said people in the local community were "shocked and concerned" to hear the news of the crash.

"There was relief at first to find out there was nobody killed in the farm building, but then shock and sadness, of course, when they found out that there were two men killed in the helicopter," he said.

Mr Weir added: "I’m sure there’ll be prayers said and maybe a memorial or something for the families, locally."

Declan Weir said people in the community are "shocked and saddened

Daryl Kennedy, secretary of Raharney Hurling Club, told RTÉ News: "Conditions today were perfect; there is a beautiful open landscape here, and whatever happened, it is quite unfortunate."

Mr Kennedy offered thoughts and prayers with all those involved in the incident and emergency services.

The scene will remain persevered overnight

'Thinking of all involved' - Taoiseach

The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Simon Harris said he is being kept up-to-date on the crash and extended thanks to emergency services at the scene.

In a post on X, formerly twitter, Mr Harris said he is "thinking of all those involved".

'Tragic'

Mayor of Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District Ken Glynn described the incident as "shocking and tragic".

"I'm surprised and shocked, it's not something you would expect to hear in your own locality," Mr Glynn said.

He said his thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved in the incident and the first responders.

"It is a difficult scene for emergency services to be attending," he said.

The crash is said to have happened on a farm near a GAA club in Killucan

Fr Stan Deegan, parish priest of St Brigid's Church in Raharney, told RTÉ News he was "shocked to hear the news".

"Whoever the people are who are involved in the incident, and wherever they are from, I hope and pray that life will be spared," he said.

"It is a serious event, and you would worry for the families involved.

"The local community is a very hospitable one, with a good community spirit, and the people here would respond to local needs."
