How do you sync an iPhone and iPad using iCloud?

Here's how to connect your favorite Apple devices together


Trying to sync up your iPhone and iPad? No worries, we've got you covered. It's not too complicated, but it's not very intuitive either. It's also not free... depending on how much storage you use.

The best iPad deals are popping off right now, so it's unsurprising that folks are trying to figure out how to sync their iPhone to their iPad. But you already knew that probably, since you're here.

Are you signed in?


First things first, before you sync your iPhone and iPad, you need to be on the same account. If you don't know, go to Settings and look in the top left corner.

Is your Apple ID identical to your iPhone and iPad? If not, click on the name there and press the Sign Out button on the bottom right.

From here, you can click the top left again and sign into the account you want both your iPhone and iPad to get access to.

Storage check: How much do you need?


How much storage do you have left in that bank? Each account comes with 5GB of free storage, which may not be enough to store all your data. My Google Photos are packing 150GB already, and that's from thousands of vacation photos (I can't stop taking pics of my cute baby).

Need more storage? Go to Settings and click on your name. Then, select iCloud and choose a plan that best suits your needs. There's 50GB for $1.29/month, 200GB for $3.99/month, and 2TB for $12.99/month. The 200GB plan should be more than enough for most people.

How to sync iPhone and iPad


Now that you've got the space, you can sync your iPhone and iPad without worrying about a traffic jam of data. Of course, don't forget to turn on iCloud backups in general, which you can do by going to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then toggle everything. Now, here's how to sync your iPhone and iPad.

Step 1. Like before, go to Settings on your iPhone and iPad > Your name > iCloud.

Step 2. In the section labeled "Apps using iCloud," click Show All.

Step 3. This is important: Toggle the apps you want to sync across devices, BUT your iPhone and iPad must share the same settings. So, if you've enabled syncing for iCloud Photos on one device, you need to enable it for the other as well to sync seamlessly.

Step 4. You might also want to sync your downloads, which you can do by going to Settings > App Store > Automatic Downloads. Again, toggle everything.

Your devices should be synced up now. If something doesn't get synced, you can check its status by going to Settings > Your Name > iCloud.

The Apple September Event is also coming soon, which will deliver the official release of iOS 18 — making this a great time to freshen up your Apple software knowledge. We've been swooning a little bit during the iOS 18 public beta, and this is a great slice of knowledge to carry with you into the next major iOS release.

Changing your Apple ID password is simple, and you can do it across most of your Apple devices. Let's jump into the how.

How to change your Apple ID password

How to change Apple ID password on Apple iPhone/iPad/Watch/Vision Pro


Thankfully, this method is the same across the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.

Step 1. Get yourself down to Settings and then click on your name > Sign-In & Security.

Step 2. Select Change Password. This is where it'll prompt you to enter your current Apple ID password or device password. Then you'll enter your new password twice.

Step 3. If you forgot your password, you can go to Apple's iForgot website.

Step 4. Once you're done, you can confirm the change.

How to change Apple ID password on Mac


Since Mac uses macOS as opposed to the many iOS variants (iPadOS, watchOS, etc.), this method is only slightly different.

Step 1. Click that big ol' Apple menu button and then go to System Settings > Your name.

Step 2. Select Sign-In & Security > Change Password. Then you'll be prompted to enter your current Mac password (not Apple ID password).

Step 3. Then you'll enter your Apple ID password and now you can change your password and confirm said change.

How to change Apple ID password on web


This is the simplest method since you can access the web pretty much anywhere and it likely won't be different depending on the software you have.

Step 1. You'll need to hop over to appleid.apple.com and sign in. (Forgot your password? Go to Apple's iForgot website.)

Step 2. The Sign-In and Security section is the first tab under your name and that's where you need to be.

Step 3. Click Password then enter your current password and your new password twice. Finally, hit Change Password.

How to change Apple ID password on child's account

You should be able to do this on the iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro.

Step 1. Run over to Settings > Family > your child's name.

Step 2. Click Apple ID & Password.

Step 3. Now you can select the option to change your child's password. You'll need to enter your device password to access it.

Step 4. Follow the instructions that prompt on-screen to change your child's password. It's as simple as that.

A foldable iPhone may arrive in 2026 now that Apple has solved a major design problem

Apple's unicorn appears yet again in this latest report


It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Apple's foldable iPhone! Thanks to a Tuesday report from The Information, we have some new details on the heavily rumored foldable iPhone, which I imagine will be called the iPhone Fold.

A few months ago, The Information reported on Apple contacting a manufacturer about parts for foldable phones. Now, it seems Apple is one step further in the process, creating an internal code name for the foldable iPhone: V68.

According to The Information, this move could "[signal] that the idea has moved beyond the conceptual stage and is now an official product in development with suppliers." If true, we might see an iPhone fold launch as soon as 2026.

Of course, it's worth noting that just because the 'iPhone Fold' has an internal code name and is seemingly moving forward in production. That said, this is a positive sign for the future of foldable iPhones. And if Apple is business-savvy — which historically, it is — creating a foldable iPhone soon to compete with Google's and Samsung's foldable phones would be a smart move.

The report from The Information also details a few design specifics, including one major problem Apple may have overcome.

Apple's foldable iPhone design moves forward

According to The Information, Apple's engineers working on the foldable iPhone were facing a big problem: making the phone "half as thin as current iPhone models so it wouldn't be too thick when shut." Now, it seems this problem may have been solved.

Reportedly, Apple has developed a "significantly thinner iPhone, internally code-named D23." If this innovation can translate from a traditional iPhone to a foldable iPhone, Apple's teams can move on to other potential issues, like preventing a display crease after multiple folds and making sure there's a market for the 'iPhone Fold.'

That said, if the foldable iPhone has really moved past the conceptual stage and into the development stage, I'd argue that most major issues have already been resolved.


The foldable iPhone will supposedly "fold widthwise like a clamshell," according to "two people with direct knowledge of the matter" via The Information. This means it'll resemble Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series, not the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Apple is known for delivering a polished product, even for the first-gen, whether it's hardware or software, even if this means extending its release date. After all, Apple was fashionably late to the AI game, but it seems to have paid off — Apple Intelligence isn't here yet, but it looks quite promising.

If you don't anticipate needing to upgrade your iPhone until 2026, it might be worth holding out for the 'iPhone Fold.' Otherwise, your options include the existing iPhone 15 lineup, or the upcoming iPhone 16 series.

Comparing the Cameras of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max: Here's How They Stack Up

I took hundreds of photos with Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra. Each excelled in some situations and struggled in others.


Apple and Samsung's premium phones each have different approaches to photography. The shiny titanium-clad and -colored $1,300 Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with four rear cameras, including two dedicated to zooming and one with a 200-megapixel sensor. Apple's titanium-clad and -colored $1,200 iPhone 15 Pro Max packs three rear cameras, one for zooming and a main one with a 48-megapixel sensor.

Let me state the obvious: Both capture some of the absolute best photos you can take from any phone today, especially in challenging environments like high-contrast scenes (think a sunset) or places where the lighting is dim (think a restaurant).

Before I took a single snap, I expected the S24's array of zoom cameras to handle distanced subjects better. And yet I also knew that Apple is no slouch and might bury Samsung's best efforts with the iPhone's masterful photo processing and video image quality. How do they stack up against each other?

I took them around San Francisco to find out.

After I shot hundreds of photos and videos with both phones and compared them side by side, a more complex reality revealed itself, with the iPhone and Ultra excelling in some situations and struggling in others.

Cutting-edge camera hardware, apps

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a trio of lenses: wide, ultrawide and telephoto. The main camera has a 48-megapixel sensor, while the other two have a resolution of 12 megapixels. There's a bit of a gulf in terms of zooming between the main 1x camera and the 5x telephoto. And that's where the differences between the two phones start to reveal themselves.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra has a similar trio of lenses but adds a second telephoto, with a 3x zoom level. Think of it as if Apple took the 15 Pro Max and added the iPhone 15 Pro's dedicated 3x telephoto to the back, thus creating an actually nonexistent iPhone 15 Ultra with both 3x and 5x cameras.

Camera hardware specs compared

That's a lot of damn cameras. Remember the days when phones had just one?

The S24 Ultra's main camera has a 200-megapixel sensor, and the new 5x telephoto camera has a 50-megapixel one. Both Apple and Samsung use their main camera's high resolution sensor (and in Samsung's case the one on the Ultra's 5x telephoto camera) to combine multiple pixels to create 12-megapixel photos that are brighter and have more detail and less image noise. The phones can also use sensor crop to effectively turn the main 1x shooter into a 2x camera that takes 12-megapixel photos (without pixel binning). It's curious that the Ultra's 3x 10-megapixel camera takes 12-megapixel images. Where does it get those two extra megapixels from?

In regard to the shooting experience, I love the S24 Ultra's new screen, which is far less reflective than the iPhone's. I don't have trouble seeing what's on the 15 Pro Max, even in direct sunlight, but the Ultra's display feels more immersive because there's less glare when taking photos.

The camera apps on both are packed with familiar options like dedicated photo, video and portrait modes, as well as the ability to shoot Raw files and change resolution on some of the cameras.

The iPhone can capture ProRes video files and spatial videos (which can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 VR headsets). Samsung's camera app has dedicated pro modes for photos and videos, and is more customizable. I can move the camera modes around to my liking and add ones I prefer. I can also use the Ultra's S Pen as a remote shutter button to take a photo.

One of my favorite options is adding a floating shutter button that can be positioned anywhere on screen to take a photo. It's great for those times you can't reach the absolute bottom of the screen to tap the regular shutter button, or when using volume buttons isn't an option.

News on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch 10

The famous fruit is asking you to take another bite: The 2024 Apple September event will unveil its iPhone 16 and several other devices this fall.

Technically, Apple hasn't confirmed its September event, but we all know it will happen. We’ll see if the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro convince skeptics to switch sides. If they do, it’s possible that the anticipated Apple Watch Series 10 (or Apple Watch X) could convert consumers.

Other products are still in the works. The iPad mini 7 or a new set of AirPods could make a splash. Then there’s the elephant in the room: Apple Intelligence.

Here’s everything we know about the Apple September Event 2024 and when it might occur.

WHEN IS THE APPLE SEPTEMBER EVENT 2024?

Apple events are typically announced two weeks before the official date. The Cupertino-based tech giant doesn’t give you much time to excite — and that’s because it’s Apple.

However, as it has consistently held its events on the second Tuesday of September, we may already know when. That’d be September 10.

And as with most Apple events, it’ll likely start at 10 a.m. Pacific / 1 p.m. Eastern. You can stream it on YouTube or directly on Apple’s website or Apple TV.

IPHONE 16 AND IPHONE 16 PRO

It’s all about the iPhones, baby. The siblings birthed this year are anticipated to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Let’s jump into the iPhone house.

Component costs have been rising for years, and Apple's flagship product is also getting more ex. The iPhone 15 Pro Max jumped to $1,199 from $1,099 in the 14 Pro Max. Ideally, the iPhone 16 will remain at the model’s usual $799; the same goes for the iPhone 16 Plus at $899 and the iPhone 16 Pro at $999. But don’t be shocked if prices go up.

A report from a Weibo user claims that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will remain at their current sizes, 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively. However, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will scale up to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively. Echoing the Weibo rumor, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims that the iPhone 16 Pro models will grow “a couple tenths of an inch diagonally.”

Leaks about the iPhone posted on Weibo also indicate that the Action button (from iPhone 15 Pro models) will reach the base iPhone 16 models. The new Capture button (a camera shutter button) is also present. And then there’s the new camera block, which aligns the cameras vertically instead of diagonally.

The most exciting rumor is the three-nanometer A18 chip

We all love design changes, but the most exciting rumor is the 3-nanometer A18 chip. We expected the iPhone base models to inherit last year’s Pro chip (Apple A17).

According to industry analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 series will launch with the A18 Bionic chips. More power across the board is excellent — but it does remind us of the component-cost concern.

Then there are the battery life rumors. Baby Baby Sauce on Weibo claims that the iPhone 16 battery capacity is increasing across the board, except for the iPhone 16 Plus. Who knows what kind of real-world impact that’ll have on the phones?

Don’t get me started on cameras. The family is getting an improved telephoto lens with the exact 48MP resolution, while the Pro models are getting a larger sensor. Or possibly a second 48MP sensor, according to a research note from Jeff Pu (via MacRumors).

The family of iPhones will ship with iOS 18.

APPLE WATCH 10

The Apple Watch 10 (or X) is all but guaranteed to appear at the 2024 Apple September Event. However, little information is available.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that it will offer "larger screen sizes" and "a thinner design." It’ll be fun or frustrating to see how that’ll be compatible with current bands.

Bloomberg also reports that the Apple Watch 10 could also monitor for sleep apnea and hypertension signs. That’s incredibly significant, coming from someone who suffers from sleep apnea.

However, Bloomberg notes that a reliable source claims that sleep apnea detection requires blood oxygen saturation data, which would require a SpO2 sensor. A sensor that led to a legal fight with healthcare technology company Masimo over intellectual property.

A report from The Elec suggests the Apple Watch 10 will receive a battery upgrade in the form of its new LTPO TFT display. This type of display consumes less power and can output the same brightness, which means longer battery life.

AIRPODS MAX 2

The only rumor we’ve heard about the AirPods Max 2 isn’t even about the AirPods Max 2 — we knew we’d get the AirPods Max 2 or at least a refresh of the original to align with the EU’s enforcement of Apple implementing USB Type-C ports.

However, Bloomberg reports that we won’t get the AirPods Max 2 this year; instead, Apple will offer the same AirPods Max 2 but in different colors.

IPAD MINI 7

The iPad mini 7 might be at the Apple September Event 2024 because its predecessor showed up in 2021. That’s right. It’s been three years. So, bring it on, Apple.

Otherwise, we haven’t heard anything about the iPad mini 7 yet. But we’re looking forward to its potential arrival.

Apple Intelligence will miss the important release date for iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

The impressive artificial intelligence tools and features expected to arrive with Apple Intelligence will likely not be ready to launch alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia in September.

The news comes after an in-the-know Apple expert, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, claimed yesterday that the company requires further time to fix potential bugs with the software and improve stability.

However, all isn't lost for those eagerly anticipating the arrival of Apple's AI-powered toolset, as developer and public betas of each platform continue to roll out — allowing eager users to test upcoming features ahead of their full release.

Apple Intelligence: When will it arrive on iPhone, Mac, and iPad?

Apple revealed its new suite of AI-backed features and tools during the company's annual WWDC in June, with the software expected to be "Deeply integrated" into the upcoming milestone releases of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. According to yesterday's report, we can expect these features to make it to each platform in October.

Should this information hold true, Apple users won't receive the much anticipated Apple Intelligence features when this year's operating system (OS) updates go live for iPhone, iPad, and Mac platforms.

While there's no official date for when we can expect the OS updates to take place, we can take an educated guess based on Apple's previous release patterns. With prior iOS, iPadOS, and macOS releases in mind, September is highly likely to be Apple's release window of choice.

Failing that, another familiar release window to Apple would be October, which could line up well with reported Apple Intelligence delays. However, there's no indication that Apple is willing to push back the launch of its operating system updates to release in tandem with its AI features.

Apple's OS updates may be a few months away from their official launch, but that doesn't mean you'll have to wait all that long until you can try these features out for yourself ahead of time.

The first batch of Apple Intelligence features will reportedly head for testing as early as this week, as part of Apple's latest round of developer betas. A second public beta is expected within the week (with the initial public beta launching earlier this month), though it may lack the same Apple Intelligence features.

However, a third public beta scheduled for early August is likely to sport some early Apple Intelligence features, with potentially more to be seen across a series of weekly updates throughout the remainder of the month.

You can check the battery life of your AirPods with ease... as long as you are connected to an Apple product. You're not? No worries, we have a solution for that, too. It's not as pretty, but we'll get there.

We've been seeing AirPods deals drop recently, so it makes sense that there's an influx of Apple AirPods owners. Apple has seemingly taken notice, too—the tech giant published a support article about AirPods battery life back in March. How to check your AirPods' battery life if they aren't connected to an Apple device is not so obvious, but it can be done.

We'll also discuss a few tips for checking AirPods battery life physically and how best you can optimize charging your AirPods. We've also covered how to pair AirPods to your laptop and how to pair AirPods to iPhone, which are relevant to the following steps.

Here's how to check AirPods battery life.

How to check AirPods battery life


Method 1: You can check the AirPods battery life by opening your Charging Case (while the AirPods are inside) and holding the case close to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The battery life should appear on your device after a few seconds.

Method 2: Check the AirPods battery life by adding the Batteries widget to your home screen. You'll be able to see the battery life percentage of your AirPods and AirPods case as well as your device.


Step 1. Open your AirPods Charging Case or take the AirPods out of the case.

Step 2. In the top right corner, select the Control Center (looks like two toggle sliders).

Step 3. Scroll to your AirPods and if you hover or select, you should see the battery life percentage.


There is no built-in function on Android to check AirPods battery life. However, that doesn't mean you can't still do it.

To check the battery life of your Apple AirPods on an Android device, you need to install a third-party app like AirBattery. Give the app permission to display over other apps, then select your AirPods model.


Similar to Android, Windows does not have a built-in function to check AirPods' battery life. Third-party apps to the rescue once more!

You can download Bluetooth Battery Monitor, which you can use to see the battery life percentage on your Apple AirPods and any Bluetooth device. Once the app is installed, open it and start adding your devices.


You can technically check your AirPods battery life via the Charging Case, but it's not helpful.

The status light will turn on when your AirPods Charging Case is open. If it's green, that means you have more than one full charge remaining. It will turn amber if it's less than one full charge.

OPTIMIZED BATTERY CHARGING

We also have a few tips to optimize your battery charging for AirPods. The Optimized Battery Charging feature is available for the AirPods Pro and the third-generation AirPods.

The iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch adjust how your AirPods Pro or third-generation AirPods charge based on your routines. So, they'll keep your AirPods at 80% until shortly before you need to use them.

This is mostly helpful for those who have scheduled charging routines, but if you can work one in, it might be a good idea for your AirPods' battery health.

Optimized Battery Charging is enabled by default, but you can disable it by opening the Charging Case, going to Settings > Bluetooth > More Info, and turning off Optimized Battery Charging.
